Background
Cohousing Cardiff was originally set up as project within the umbrella organisation, UK Cohousing Network. cohousing.org.uk/
For several years we worked with a Cardiff-based community housing association, Cadwyn. Together we tried to develop a mixed-tenure (rented and homeownership) Cohousing Project. We were one of the Welsh Government's 9 flagship Cooperative Housing Pilot projects. However the time and effort involved in co-developing a £4 million project proved too tricky for the group.
We parted company with Cadwyn, re-thought our options and decided to become ‘Fairwater Connections’ – what the UK Cohousing Network call ‘retrofit cohousing’. What this means is that, instead of building new houses, a group of us have moved into existing housing within easy walking distance of each other in Fairwater.
Our aim is to build a broad group of people who live locally and who are interested in figuring out how to deliberately throw in our lot with each other. This isn't living each other’s pockets, but rather we regularly link in to share food, ideas and friendship. More and more we hope to take up opportunities locally to contribute to life here in Fairwater.
Our vision is that those of us involved will feel connected to Fairwater, and that the group will be a source of fun, learning and satisfaction. We hope that this will also impact positively on the area in ways that will become apparent in as we develop. We are not clear where exactly this will take us, nor what form it may take – but we welcome new people who’d like to find out more or throw in ideas of how to take it forward.
Every Thursday evening we eat together in each other’s homes, taking turns to cook. Over the last few months about 20 people have joined us for some food and chat at different times. This is a great way to find out about us and what we are up to. If you would be interested in joining for a Thursday evening meal – please get in touch.
