Fairwater Connections
In May 2016 Cohousing Cardiff successfully bid for money from the Lottery to set up Fairwater Connections - the community development side of Cohousing Cardiff that will deliver locally based fun and educational activity in Fairwater.
During the autumn of 2016, Fairwater Connections have delivered three community events aimed at engaging local residents, including older people.
Linking in with Young People:
A particularly innovative aspect of our project is that is links with local schools, involving pupils who are studying their Community Challenge - part of the Welsh Baccalaureate. With our support, school children designed, delivered and evaluated two community events. The first was a consultation event aimed at finding out what local people wanted in terms of activities in Fairwater. The second event , in response to the consultation, focused on Local History.
This was the pupils' first opportunity to stand up and speak in public - quite a challenge, but the appreciateive support they received from the residents who atended, made it possible to take those risks.
Through
Getting together:
Local people were also pleased to meet the young people - the pupils had made sure there were lots of oppotunities to meet and chat across the generations - 'speed-dating' was organised, as well as small group and whole group discussion where everyone had a chance to participate.
Feedback from the evaluation included :
the opportunity to find out about each others lives
.....
Local History:
Fairwater estate has grown up in living memory. The third community event focused on local history - responding to a ground-swell of interest in the topic. Ryan Williams, a local historian had given a presentation about the historic buildings- many lost, but some still remaining - in Fairwater.
People also really appreciated the opportunity to share their memories and stories about the area.
Some facinating stories were recorded ....
